Canada creates forum for the cannabis industry

Canada’s Cannabis Industry Forum has been created as a platform for dialogue, collaboration and innovation, and to ensure the industry’s growth is both economically viable and socially responsible.

To address the challenges and opportunities within the legal cannabis sector, the Government of Canada has initiated the Cannabis Industry Forum, designed to foster dialogue and develop strategies for this young industry.

Since the historic legalization of recreational cannabis in October 2018, Canada has been at the forefront of establishing a regulated market aimed at safeguarding public health, preventing underaged youth access, and curtailing illicit trade. However, navigating the complexities of this new industry has revealed both economic potential and hurdles.

The Cannabis Industry Forum, in response, has been created as a platform for dialogue, collaboration and innovation, and to ensure its growth is both economically viable and socially responsible.

The forum is composed of a panel of nine industry leaders, representing a range of businesses within the cannabis sector, including cultivation, processing and sales logistics.

Hugo Alves, CEO, Founder and Director of Auxly Cannabis Group, is chairing the forum, joined by Philippe Dépault, of Québec Craft Cannabis, Taylor Giovannini of Oceanic Releaf, and Beena Goldenberg of Organigram Holdings, among others.

“The Cannabis Industry Forum helps create innovative solutions to barriers that exist in this industry. Canada is working with industry leaders to become an innovator and leader in this changing economy,” said François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.

The forum has already begun its work, holding preliminary meetings since spring 2023. Its efforts are in alignment with the objectives of the Cannabis Act, which has significantly contributed to reducing the illicit market’s footprint by up to 70 per cent since the act’s implementation.

With a focus on economic growth, public health, and safety, the forum serves a ground for dialogue on how to protect and better the industry.
