If you’ve ever been at a festival, watching the beer garden buzz and wishing you could grab a joint instead of a pint, you’re in luck.
This summer, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) made history as the first and only regulator in Canada to permit cannabis sales at 18+ concerts and festivals – and one brand is already leading the way in shaping that experience.
Why this move matters
For years, Alberta has been the only province to even allow cannabis sales at 18+ events. But the vibe never fully matched the freedom of a festival – while beer gardens and food trucks thrived, cannabis culture was still stuck in a regulatory box.
That’s changing. Now, retailers can apply for special permits to sell on-site at concerts, festivals and cultural events. Consumption areas are still separated and adults-only, but cannabis is finally being recognized as a normal part of the festival landscape – right alongside cold drinks and great music.
As Ian Scott, Plantlife’s VP of Operations, put it: “We’re showing how cannabis can responsibly exist in the same spaces as beer gardens or food trucks.”
Early reactions: Smooth, safe and positive
According to festival organizers, cannabis integration has been seamless. Guests appreciated the convenience, compliance was tight, and the atmosphere stayed fun and respectful. One organizer even called it a “historic moment” for live music and cannabis culture in Canada.
What this means for cannabis culture
This shift is about more than access – it’s about inclusion. Festivals are cultural touchpoints, places where people celebrate music, food, art and now cannabis. If Alberta is the testing ground, the question is: how long before other provinces follow?
For now, one thing’s certain – if you’re hitting a major festival in Alberta this summer, don’t just look for the beer tent. There’s a good chance you’ll see a cannabis booth, too.
